The Lightness of Being collection is our venture to regress to the foundational existence of a hat. In this anthology, MDV takes from minimalist designs to reorganize the elements of each hat– an intent to accentuate its single sublime nature. By drawing attention to the rightful essence of a hat only altered to be worn, the piece is freed from any presumption, expectation or belief. MDV breaks from the burdening ideals, prejudices, assumptions and conjectures that do not belong to who we really are. To leave these behind we must go back to our roots, our origins, our own creation– Lightness of Being is precisely a celebration of this.
Inspired by Milan Kundera’s existential dilemma present in the duality of a way of being, we set out to create a collection leaning towards the cathartic forms of lightness. Clearing the hat’s meaning of weighty preconceptions we, once again, arrived at a work of art where its simplicity becomes the protagonist. The hat is crafted into a variety of forms ranging from classic and clean-cut shapes to complex asymmetric silhouettes– its pureness brought back through effortless and instinctual existence.
Remaining close to the origins of these materials, this collection honors the power and grace of a piece of work bare of enhancement. When we strip a piece of adornments and embellishments we simply let it be. In this way, the hat becomes a personage in itself, a character of its own story– alive through its sole existence.
With the Lightness of Being collection craftsmanship is raised to its most honest and solid realization, culminating in a work of art that prevails in need of nothing other than itself.
